1. Audit
The law requires a statutory audit in the following cases:
- A limited company with turnover in excess of £6.5 million
or gross assets in excess of £3.26
million or if the company is part of a group whose turnover
and gross assets exceed these figures
- A public Limited Company (PLC) or a banking, insurance, or
finance company
- If required by a profession or trade organisation to have
accounts audited eg solicitors
- 10% or more of the company’s shareholders demand an
audit
A business may also choose to have an audit even though not
required by law, such as in the following circumstances:
-to demonstrate the reliability of its financial information
to third parties such as potential investors, financial institutions,
suppliers
-to deter any potential fraudster
An audit involves a detailed review and understanding of the
company’s business, accounting records, and systems of
internal controls. Such a review and understanding can lead
to proactive business advice on many matters.

in England and Wales to carry out audit work. The work will
be conducted to the highest standard expected by our Institute
